The short version
- Home covers gaming, browsing, study and everyday work
- Pro adds BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop hosting and business features
- Both editions perform identically for speed and gaming
- You can move from Home to Pro later with an upgrade key
Tip: Already running Home? A Windows upgrade key moves you to Pro in minutes, keeping your files and apps – no reinstall needed.
Windows Home and Windows Pro cost different amounts and most of the comparison tables online are useless, because they list twenty features when only about four matter to a real person. Here is the honest version.
The short answer
If you use your computer for work at home, browsing, office documents, photos or games, Home is enough. Pro exists mainly for business features you will never open.
What Pro actually adds
BitLocker drive encryption
Encrypts the whole drive so that someone who steals the laptop cannot read your files by removing the disk. If you carry a laptop with sensitive material on it, this alone can justify Pro.
Remote Desktop, as the host
Both editions can connect out to another machine. Only Pro can accept an incoming connection. If you need to reach this computer from elsewhere, you need Pro.
Joining a domain or Azure AD
Required if your workplace manages the machine centrally. If nobody has ever mentioned a domain to you, you do not need it.
Hyper-V
Microsoft’s built-in virtual machine software. Useful if you run virtual machines. Alternatives exist that work on Home.
Group Policy and update deferral
Fine-grained control over how the machine behaves and when updates install. Mostly of interest to IT administrators.
What is identical
Performance, security updates, Windows Defender, the interface, gaming performance and the applications you can run are the same. Pro is not faster and it is not more secure in everyday use.
Already on Home and want Pro?
You do not need to reinstall. An upgrade key changes the edition in place and keeps your files and applications. We sell those separately and they are cheaper than a full Pro licence.
What about Enterprise, Education and Workstations?
Enterprise and Education are licensed to organisations and are rarely the right choice for an individual. Pro for Workstations is for machines with very high core counts or very large amounts of memory. If you are not sure, ask us before you buy.

Common questions
Is Windows 11 Pro worth it over Home?
If you use BitLocker encryption, host Remote Desktop connections, run virtual machines or join a work domain, yes. If your PC is for gaming, browsing and everyday work, Home does everything you need and costs less.
Can I upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro later?
Yes. An upgrade key switches the edition in Settings without reinstalling Windows. Your files, apps and settings stay in place and the change takes a few minutes.
Do Home and Pro perform differently for gaming?
No. Both editions share the same core, the same drivers and the same performance. Pro adds management and security features, not speed.
